JAY SMITH summarises some of the research of PATRICIA CRONE and DAN GIBSON regarding Mecca, demonstrating:
    • Mosques built in the first century after the death of Mohammed did not point to Mecca. They consistently pointed to Petra.
    • The geographic features described in the Koran and previously assumed to refer to Mecca do not match the actual features of Mecca. But do match the features of Petra.
    • Although Mecca has traditionally been considered a significant trade centre, this does not match the historical evidence.
This video consists of excerpts from a longer (70 min.) talk given by JAY SMITH, titled "An Historical Critique of Islam's Beginnings", first published online on September 12 2013.
